SmartMX, the world’s first ultra low power, cost optimized, high performance family of smart card controller ICs. SmartMX is suitable for use in single- and multi-application markets ranging from banking/finance and mobile communications to secure network access, payTV and transportation.

SmartMX has expanded memory configurations of more than 500Kbyte of on-chip memory and enhanced levels of functionality to significantly improve execution speeds. It also features cryptographic co-processors for public key algorithms including Elliptic curve, DES and AES and a state of the art memory management unit to enhance security levels within a multi-application setup. SmartMX offers three different interface options – contact interface ISO 7816, contactless interface ISO 14443A and a USB 1.1 interface.

“SmartMX has been designed to meet the highest performance standards and forthcoming security requirements, while providing the cost-efficiency demanded by application markets that use large volumes of smart cards,” said Reinhard Kalla, general manager ChipCards at Philips Semiconductors. “Building on Philips Semiconductors’ broad experience in smart card ICs and its expertise in security and cryptography, SmartMX is the first product family of its kind to enable manufacturers to add a range of additional services on a single IC-based smart card using interface options such as contactless and USB.”

SmartMX products will be manufactured using the market leading 0.18µm, 5 metal layer technology and will support Class “A”, “B” and “C” (1.8V to 5 V) voltage ranges as requested by application standards such as 3GPP (3rd generation Mobile communication) and EMV (credit/debit card standard). SmartMX-based products will become available in mid 2002 targeting high volume and cost sensitive, single- and multi-application markets.

SmartMX’s contact interface meets the international standard ISO 7816, the physical standard for contact smart cards while its contactless interface is compatible with the MIFARE range of products used in a wide variety of transport schemes and compliant with ISO14443A, the industry and de-facto standard for contactless smart cards. The USB1.1 interface makes SmartMX the first solution of its kind capable of producing plug and play compatible IC cards for secure access to the PC world.

SmartMX combines ultra low power design and high performance with advanced attack resistance through powerful cryptographic co-processors capable of supporting RSA, ECC and secret key encryption methods, for example triple DES and its successor AES, with enhanced execution speed. SmartMX is designed for proprietary operating systems as well as open platform solutions like Java and Multos to service a range of application areas in the IT environment.

Additionally, SmartMX contains a built-in memory management unit to support strong firewalls and ensure that memory segments and banks of data in multi-application cards are clearly defined and kept separate from one another.
